New artwork from Iowa

Meet the Artists

Friday, April 4 // 11:30AM - 1:00PM

Have you ever wondered how a piece of music gets made? Let us show you! Go inside the creation of a new artwork with Decorah-based composer Brooke Joyce and his Luther college colleague, wcfsymphony Principal Oboe Heather Armstrong. Heather will be the soloist in our world premiere of Brooke’s new piece based on the exquisite art deco drawings of Robert Mallet-Stevens. The two will engage in discussion moderated by wcfsymphony Artistic Director Jason Weinberger exploring the work’s creation and the challenges and rewards of presenting an entirely new piece of music. The modern dining spaces and cuisine of Montage form the perfect backdrop for a conversation about the process of making art.

Location: Montage

Performance: Spaces: Mahler 1 and World Premiere

When philosopher Johann Wolfgang van Goethe referred to music as ‘liquid architecture’ he could have been talking about this remarkable program, featuring glorious Gabrielli canons echoing high above the Great Hall stage, a brand new work by Iowa composer Brooke Joyce inspired by deco architectural drawings, and Mahler’s spacious First Symphony.

Gabrieli – Two Canzonas for Brass
Brooke Joyce – Une Cité Moderne with Heather Armstrong, oboe (World Premiere)
