Not to worry if you missed Gabriel Kahane’s appearances yesterday on Iowa Public Radio performing his solo music and speaking about Crane Palimpsest, the piece we’ll be playing with him this weekend. We’ve got this preview of the work from the man himself, recorded earlier this year prior to its premiere at Carnegie Hall. Hear more firsthand insight into Crane from Gabriel and Artistic Director Jason Weinberger at Saturday’s Curtain Talk, a free, informal conversation preceding our performance.
From Jason’s amazing Tumblr, a glimpse of the piece that opens our season next week:
Rehearsals start Thursday for this season’s first WCFSO concert, which itself begins with a selection of tunes from Henry Purcell’s delightful incidental music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. While we will mostly stick to Purcell’s printed instrumentation of strings and trumpets I couldn’t resist sharing this improvised percussion breakdown over the Fairies’ Dance – a musical moment pulsing with imagination and rhythmic vitality, both hallmarks of William Christie’s sparkling interpretations.
